This is an interesting book about Edgar Cayce, the sleeping prophet who entered into a sleeping trance
and gave health readings. In his lifetime he gave over 14,000 of these readings. Edgar Cayce died in 1945
in Virginia. The Research and Enlightment (the ARE) Center in Virginia Beach houses his readings.
Edgar Cayce believed that healing came from within and if one would correct physical or mental
disturbances to positive attitudes then elements would be in place to rebuild health. During his lifetime, he
was well ahead of his comtempories knowing the great importance that nutrition played in the cause, cure
and prevention of disease.
He recognized the importance of food combinations, its chemical and digestive processes, cooking methods
and mental attitude at meal times. Edgar Cayce stated that poor eliminations hindered the body. In case of
toxicity, he recommended a body cleansing fast of either a 3-day apple diet, or a 4-day grape diet or a
5-day orange diet. He was also an advocate of colonics and castor oil packs. His readings recommended
hydrotherapy and massage for preventive and curative measures. Many of his reading suggested the use
of peanut or olive oil and sometimes myrrh to stimulate muscles in a massage.
Edgar Cayce recommended certain foods to assist with the elimination process such as, leafy vegetables,
stewed figs, raisins, apricots and occasionally pears. Good circulation is also important to help prevent
strokes, heart attacks and other diseases. Edgar Cayce often prescribed massage, hydrotherapy,
osteopathy and chiropractic therapy for these problems.
He was ahead of his time in predicting that a drop of blood would diagnose health. He stated, "there is no
condition in a body that the reflection of same may not be traced in the blood supply, for not only does the
blood stream carry the rebuilding forces to the body, it also takes the used forces through proper channels
in the various portions of the system.
In today's fast pace society of drive up/ through windows, fast lanes, on the fast track, etc., the blood
pressure and sugar rise while the stomach acid increases and stress levels go off the chart. Many turn to
stimulants such as alcohol, drugs and overeating to try to relax. Edgar Cayce often recommended in nerve
conditions the use of two appliances, the wet-cell battery and the impedance device, forms of bio-electric
medicine that he invented while in a trance-like state.
Concerning diet and nutrition, he preferred natural foods to vitamins and suggested that if one does take
vitamins that they periodically give them a rest. He believed in the 80-20 rule, meaning to eat 80% alkaline
reacting food to 20% acid reacting foods. He stated that colds germs cannot live in an alkaline system. He
believed that if alkalinity is maintained in the system by eating foods such as lettuce, carrots and celery,
then the blood supply would be maintained in a condition to immunize a person.
Almonds were a favorite of his writings. He stated that if one ate 2 or 3 almonds every day, one would never
have to worry about cancer. He recommended eating Jerusalem artichokes for diabetes due to the high
content of insulin in them. He recommended eating vegetables in gelatin due to the gelatin's enzymatic
properties. He also gave a reading to eat raw vegetables with gelatin to help improve eye sight.
He was a proponent of eating fresh vegetables and grown as close to home as possible. In regards to the
preparation of foods, he did not recommend frying. He preferred the use of a pressure cooker instead.
This book also details the Apple Diet, how to take an enema and how to make castor oil packs. The last
section of the book covers beauty and anti-aging. Two secrets that he revealed are two herbs which are
used by the Chinese, Fo-ti-Tieng and gotu kola.
Some excellent quotes from the book are:
"know that there is within self all healing that may be accomplished for the body. For all
healing must come from the Divine, for who healeth thy disease? The Source of Universal
Supply".
" Mind is ever the builder that which the body-mind feeds upon, that it gradually becomes"!
The body must not lose courage to carry on, but working in patience know that all healing,
all help must arise from constructive thinking, constructive application and most and first
of all, constructive spiritual inspiration...Use [body] disturbances as stepping stones toward
higher and better and greater understanding.
