Those who desire to improve the condition of the hair should learn, first of all, that vigorous health and good
blood are more important than local treatments.  In poor health the hair falls out or becomes dull in appearance.
In vigorous health the hair takes on a beautiful luster.  Therefore, even the hair reflects the general condition of
the body.

The most important and valuable treatment for the hair is brushing.  In our great grandmothers’ day, women spent
30 minutes or more brushing their hair.  Brushing stimulates the roots of the hair and promotes circulation in the
scalp.  Following brushing, massaging the tissues around the roots of the hair is of great value to stimulate
circulation.

Gentle, hair pulling, supplementing the brushing, is of great value in strengthening the roots of the hair.  One
should pull the roots just enough to bring about a feeling of life in the roots.  This should be done at night before
going to sleep and before styling the hair in the morning.

When washing the hair, strong soaps should not be used.  In most cases a plain castile soap should be used.
The frequency of washing depends upon the hair.  When the hair is dull and dry, it should not be washed too
often.  When hair is very oily or when there is dandruff, frequent washing is required.

If dandruff is present, is due to excessive activity of the oil glands and should be combated with scalp massages,
brushing and hair pulling in order to improve the circulation.  One suffering from dandruff should use lots of cold
water.  Those who suffer with falling hair usually have dandruff or a disease.  Improved health and stimulating
treatments of the scalp by brushing and massage will help.  Exposure to sunshine each day will help improve the
hair.

Brittle or the splitting of hair is due to the lack of activity of the oil glands or from using strong soaps.  In such
cases, a little olive oil rubbed into the scalp can help.

Baldness can be caused wearing close-fitting, ill-ventilated hats, allowing deficient blood supply to the hair.  The
best mode of treatment is by infrequent shampooing, by massage that does not tangle and break the hair and
gentle brushing.

Some good, old-fashioned conditioners for the hair are mayonnaise or using castor oil, which requires more work
to get it out of the hair.  However, if hair is extremely damaged, nothing works better than castor oil.  Vinegar mixed
with water makes an excellent rinse for hair, just rinse it well.  Health food stores have numerous, wonderful
products for the hair.
