There is no deadlier poison in nature than nicotine. The tobacco chewer, snuff taker, cigar smoker and
cigarette fiend, no matter what his or her reason for the indulgence in the weed, is admininistering poison to
the body. The administering of poison to an adult may not immediately be dangerous. No matter how slow
the poison may be, it is quicken in its action on young people because their nerves are more tender,
sensitive and easily affected.
No user of tobacco can ever deny that the habit is:
(a) a filthy one, in that it brings frequent spitting of stained salvia by chewers, sickening
smoke odors and discharge of discolored mucous by snuffers. Add to this the
distinguishingly, odorous smoke of the cigarette smoker.
(b) No matter what the excuse, the habit is a dangerous one.
(c) It is an expensive habit.
(d) It is an inconvenient habit and often interferes with work.
Almost 100 years ago the following was believed about tobacco:
1. Tobacco in any form hinders the growth and injures the nerves and health.
2. Cigarettes foster the tobacco habit and may make one a slave to it.
3. The cigarette habit does not help one in his or her lifework and may prevent one from
obtaining a good position in business.
4. Most all reliable business establishments refuse to employ those who smoke.
5. The following are among the poisons and drugs used in the manufacture of cigarettes:
arsenic, creosote, nicotine, opium, saltpetre, tonca flavoring and rum, all of which are
harmful.
6. Cigarette smoking makes one dull and stupid, injuries one's memory and prevents one's
advance in school.
7. Smoking creates an unnatural thirst, which may lead to drinking intoxicating liquors.
8. Smoking is a selfish habit which may cause annoyance, discomfort and distress to
others.
9. Tobacco affects the eyes, ear and nose, or sight, hearing and smelling and also the
heart.
10. It cost more than most can afford to pay to have their nerves and health ruined.
11. Smoking is a useless and expensive habit and always does harm in a greater or less
degree.
12. It is also a filthy habit and defies the body. Anything that defiles or injuries the body is
a sin against God, who created man in His own image.
Shape up every fiber in your being to combat the situation. Resolve to be free. Persevere in the resolve.
Weaken at no point. Absentation will embrace will power which encourages triumph. Grow and grow
stronger and finally rejoice in the mastery of the habit.
